Jose Mourinho’s job hanging by a thread after nine-hour meeting

The Special One spoke with club chiefs today following Monday night’s defeat to Leicester City

Jose Mourinho’s days as Chelsea manager could be numbered with the club sitting a point above the relegation zone.

The Portuguese had a nine-hour meeting with Chelsea chief executives and now the decision lies with Roman Abramovich whether to sack the manager for a second time.

Two consecutive defeats to newly-promoted Bournemouth last weekend, followed by Monday night’s loss to Leicester have left Chelsea 20 points off the top and just a point above the relegation places.

Clock ticking

The outcome of the discussions are not completely clear but it is understood that The Special One is to have one more opportunity to prove he can turn their fortunes around.

After the defeat Monday, Mourinho said: “I think you know me well enough, three years this time plus three years in another time so six years with you, you know me well enough that I am not afraid of a big challenge.

“In this moment it is a real big challenge. I want to stay. I hope Mr Abramovich and the board want me to stay.”

Dressing room lost?

So often this season, Mourinho refused to questioned his players’ commitment and instead blamed defeats on crucial decisions and particularly refereeing decisions.

However, Monday was the first time Mourinho blamed the squad as he said he “felt betrayed” by what he saw on the pitch.

Last season’s PFA Player of the Year, Eden Hazard was substituted in the first-half and the manager said it was Hazard himself that decided he’d had enough; once again questioning his future at the club.

This is another indication that Mourinho may have lost the dressing room as just a month ago reports emerged that a first-time player “would rather lose than win under Mourinho”.
