Eagles lead Premier League for France international

Crystal Palace have took their Premier League rivals by surprise by leading the chase for France goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, after his contract with Marseille expired.

Antonio Conte has reportedly earmarked Mandanda as a replacement for second-choice ‘keeper Asmir Begovic, while Ronald Koeman is looking to make him one of his first signings as Everton boss.

The 31-year-old was an integral part of Marseille’s team, after joining the club in 2008 from Le Havre, and Koeman is reportedly looking at the Africa-born goalkeeper as potential backup to Joel Robles , following Tim Howard’s departure.

But the French press understand that Alan Pardew’s side have held advanced discussions with the player, and made an initial approach at the end of the season.

Mandanda is currently at the European Championships with France, but will settle his future once the tournament comes to a conclusion, and will not command a fee – which will be a big coup to Palace.

Palace first choice ‘keeper Wayne Hennessey is currently at the Euros, also, with Wales. While Alex McCarthy and Julian Speroni provided Hennessey with much competition last campaign, with Pardew unable to identify a clear favourite between the sticks.

And the arrival on Mandanda could spell the end of a career for either McCarthy or Speroni, at Selhurst Park.
