Ronald Koeman open to bringing Wayne Rooney back to Everton

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has admitted he would be interested in securing a sensational Goodison Park return for Wayne Rooney.

Doubts have been cast over the future of the Manchester United star, seemingly out of favour under Jose Mourinho and struggling to recapture the goals and form that persuaded United to part with ÂŁ27m back in 2004.

Rooney’s relationship with Everton fans has warmed again in recent years, after causing controversy by once displaying a ‘Once a Blue, Always a Blue’ shirt before he left the Toffees.

Everton were the opponents for Rooney’s testimonial at Old Trafford this summer, and now he could be in line for a dramatic return to his former club.

‘He is a great player,’ Koeman said. ‘He is still not finished. I don’t know how the situation is. If Rooney is ever an option for Everton I would be very pleased.’

Leon Osman, a former Everton colleague of Rooney, is another who believes Rooney could do worse than return to where it all began.

‘It would not surprise me,’ he told Sky Sports’ Fantasy Football Club. ‘I think he has been mending bridges for a couple of seasons now and you know he is an Evertonian at heart.

‘I am pretty sure he would love to come back and I hope it happens.’
