Toffees put the former Chelsea boss top of their wish list

Everton have made former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho their top target, as they go in search of replacing sacked boss Roberto Martinez.

The Toffees sacked the Spaniard on Thursday, after a disappointing campaign for the Merseyside outfit, with the club deeming the 42-year-old’s season at Goodison Park inadequate, having failed to achieve their targets with a talented squad of players.

But the man they have put at the top of their list will surprise many Everton fans, with Mourinho understood to be the club’s primary target, despite the Portuguese being heavily linked with a takeover at Manchester United this summer.

It is understood that the club have opened talks with Mourinho, in hope that they can pull of a shock move for the man who was sacked by the Blues in December.

Endless speculation about the former Chelsea boss’s future has seen the 53-year-old dismiss he has come to an agreement with the Red Devils, to take over from Louis Van Gaal next season, and Everton are ready to make their move.

Former Ajax boss, Frank de Boer, who agreed to leave the Dutch club on the same day as Martinez was sacked, is the favourite to take over at Goodison Park, with it also understood that he held talks with the club on Friday.

Fellow Dutchman Ronald Koeman is believed to be an ideal candidate for the Everton job, although he has insisted he is happy at Southampton, while Mourinho is reportedly ready to turn down any official offer from Everton, in hope of finally agreeing a deal to take over at United.

However, after initial talks with de Boer, it is understood that the club will try to lure former boss David Moyes back to Goodison Park, after spending 11 years at the club, if a move for the Dutchman falls through.
