Hasselbaink questions Higuain fitness

Former Chelsea striker Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink has expressed doubts over the fitness levels of the club’s new loan signing Gonzalo Higuain.

Higuain has signed for Chelsea from Juventus on a loan deal for the rest of this season, with the Blues having an option to extend the loan for another season or buy the Argentine for a price around £31m.

The 31-year-old spent the first half of this season on loan at AC Milan, where he managed to score only eight goals in 22 appearances.

Hasselbaink, who scored 88 goals in 177 appearances for Chelsea, was quoted saying – “We know that he (Higuain) knows where the back of the net is. ”

“The only little worry that I have is he’s 31, how fit is he? How fit is he to cope in the Premier League? We know that the Premier League is the hardest league in the world, physically you have to be right.”

“If he is physically right, he will score goals. If he’s not he will have a little bit of a problem.”

Higuain has previously worked with current Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri. The duo was at Napoli, where the Argentine had the best season of his career, scoring 36 goals during a single 2015/16 Serie A campaign.

The 31-year-old was one of the main man for Juventus up until the end of last season, but with Cristiano Ronaldo arriving in Turin, the former was deemed surplus for requirement.

Chelsea have had a massive goal-scoring problems ever since Diego Costa departed. Alvaro Morata was signed to replace him but the Spaniard couldn’t fill his boots.

The Blues couldn’t complete the Higuain signing to make him a part of their squad to face Tottenham in the Carabao Cup, but he is expected to play against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup this weekend.
