Premier League star claims chaos has brought his team closer together

It has been a nightmare summer for Hull City, yet Tom Huddlestone believes that amidst the unrest, his teammates have become closer.

The Tigers have not signed a single player this summer, and are one of the favourites for relegation from the Premier League this season.

The club’s owners, the Allam family, are in talks to sell the club to a Chinese-based consortium.

They start their campaign this weekend against reigning champions Leicester with only thirteen fit players, and may well have to dip into their pool of young talent just to make up a matchday squad. After the Foxes, things do not get any easier, with Hull also facing Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in their first seven games.

Yet Huddlestone remains positive. He said: ‘The main positive to come out of what’s happening is that the lads left have probably got a little bit closer.

‘Everyone is willing to die for each other at the minute, and hopefully we can take that into the season.

‘Even teams in the Championship are spending dozens of millions every few weeks on players, and we are yet to bring one in.

‘It’s a bit strange. But we have just got to stick together, give it our all, and we can give teams a game on our day with our starting XI.

‘Realistically, though, we are going to need a few signings if we want to stay up.’

The Tigers will begin the campaign with Mike Phelan as caretaker-manager, and Huddlestone praised his boss in the difficult circumstances.

The ex-England midfielder added: ‘From the outside it looks like a bit of chaos.

‘But for the lads here it has been a case of getting fit, training, playing the matches and preparing for the first game of the season.

‘Mike’s done well. He has got a few new ideas, that the lads have adapted to, and if he is to get the job, it is just a shame he wasn’t given it straight away.

‘The players and staff just want clarity whichever route the chairman goes down – so that we can move forward.’
