Koeman insists defender wants to stay

The Southampton boss has today insisted that loan star, Toby Alderweirald is keen to return to St. Mary’s.

Koeman believes that he can beat Tottenham to the signature of the defender.

Atletico Madrid’s Toby Alderweireld spent last season on loan at St. Mary’s and impressed his manager and his fans.

However, the Spanish side are believed to have offered the defender to both Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Chelsea are not believed to have any interest in the Belgian, but Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly keen on the defender.

But Koeman remains confident that Alderweireld’s first season with the Saints will be enough to persuade him to choose them.

“The player would like to stay and we would like to keep him.

“But it is a little difficult at the moment with Atletico Madrid. I have a great hope that he will stay with Southampton.”

The Dutchman, however is likely to delay any move for the defender until he knows how much money he has at his disposal.

With Nathaniel Clyne today completing his ÂŁ12.5 million move to Liverpool, and with Morgan Schneiderlin linked with a ÂŁ25 million move to Manchester United, Koeman will be cautious not to make an insultingly low offer if he can afford to pay more.
