Blues legend believes Mourinho will win titles at Old Trafford

Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard believes Jose Mourinho will recreate the success he has had so far in his career at struggling Manchester United.

The Portuguese was appointed as Louis Van Gaal’s successor in the week, as the club’s worst-kept secret was finally confirmed on Friday, following Van Gaal’s sacking after the club’s FA Cup success – their first major trophy since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

And Lampard believes that Mourinho, who he worked with during the 53-year-old’s two spells at the club, has the right personality to guide the Red Devils back to their former glory days.

“Jose will have a massive effect at United,” Lampard admitted. “He knows how to get a team winning by putting his own imprint on them. His personality reflects his teams and, looking from afar, Manchester United have needed that.

“They had a lot of quality in their squad but not much oomph. He has a base there but will bring in players and he will galvanise players. Jose gives them the X Factor – he did that at Chelsea. I know it didn’t end perfectly there but I can see him succeeding at United.”

The 37-year-old, who is now in the MLS with New York City, also expects the Premier League to be just as competitive next season and believes it’s great for the Premier League for Mourinho to be staying in England.

“Next season will be as competitive as it has been for a while because a lot of teams have something to prove. But he is a top manager and a team like United need a top manager.” said Lampard.

“It’s brilliant for the Premier League that Jose is back. I had a great experience with him, especially during his first spell at Chelsea because he really helped me take my career onto the next level. I know what he brings to English football.”

The Chelsea legend also admits, looking from the perspective of a fan, that next season is going to be a great spectacle, with many of the world’s best managers taking charge in the Premier League.

“I’m not a Manchester United fan but I don’t think anyone can say they aren’t licking their lips at the prospect of Mourinho, [Pep] Guardiola, [Jurgen] Klopp, [Antonio] Conte and [Arsene] Wenger all going up against each other next season.”
