United are looking to replace Evans this summer

Leeds United are shock contenders to bring in departing Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores to Elland Road this summer.

It is understood that Massimo Cellino is set to let current boss Steve Evans’ contract expire at the club this summer, and will make a move for the Spaniard, who has been told he will be allowed to leave in the summer.

Both Evans and Flores have been unsure about their futures in recent weeks, but the latter has now been informed that his managerial services will no longer be required after the end of the current campaign, making way for Leeds to make their move.

Evans’ contract is set to expire and is one of the favourites for the managerial vacancy at League One side Peterborough United, but admits he is keen to stay at the Championship outfit.

Flores is in line to become the club’s seventh manager under the guidance of Cellino, and it is seems that the availability of the Hornets boss this summer all but confirms Evans’ departure.

The Spaniard guided the club to 13th – prior to their final game of the season against Sunderland on Saturday- and also reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. And it is that record that is attracting Leeds’ Italian chairman to make the change.

Former Inter Milan boss Walter Mazzarri is looking likely to replace Flores at Watford, and the club released a statement, saying: “Watford Football Club can confirm that Quique Sanchez Flores will leave Vicarage Road at the end of the season following the Sunderland game this weekend.

“We would like to thank Quique. He and the team achieved the target set them at the start of the season of staying in the Premier League for a second year.

“Quique leaves with all our best wishes for the future and the knowledge he is always welcome at Vicarage Road.”
