Former England striker unsure about Drinkwater absence

Alan Shearer is hoping that Roy Hodgson’s decision to cut Danny Drinkwater from the final 23-man England squad that will head to Euro 2016 in France this summer, doesn’t come back to haunt him.

Three Lions fans took to social media, with a mixed reaction to the Leicester City midfielder being left out of the England boss’ plans, after a fantastic campaign for the Foxes.

And Shearer, who scored 30 goals in 63 appearances for England, has sided with those fans who have questioned why the 26-year-old will not be on the plane to France this month.

“It’s very harsh on Drinkwater to be left out,” said Shearer.

“He’s been magnificent all season. If there’s one guy that I thought deserved a place in the squad then I thought it would be him.

“Roy hasn’t chosen him and I hope he doesn’t come back to regret that.”

Drinkwater was a key part of Leicester’s title-winning, which shocked football fans around the world. And having made his international debut in March, against the Netherlands at Wembley, he looked in good contention to secure himself a place on the plane.

Some fans had called for injury-hit Daniel Sturridge to be left at home, alongside Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson, who has recently returned from injury. However, Hodgson decided to keep the Liverpool duo, alongside teenage sensation Marcus Rashford, in his final squad.

Drinkwater made 35 league appearances for Leicester this campaign, as they finished 10 points clear of second placed Arsenal, going on to make three appearances for the Three Lions.

But Hodgson’s decision to leave him out, alongside Andros Townsend and Fabian Delph, has not caused too much upset. As the 26-year-old took to Instagram to back his England teammates, and wish the Three Lions good luck in France this summer.
