Five Things Learned From Liverpool’s Europa League Victory Over Manchester United

Liverpool gained an impressive 2-0 win against arch-rivals Manchester United tonight in the Europa League, the first ever European clash between these two clubs. Goals from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino made most of, but not all, difference as David De Gea prevented what could have been at least a four or five goal deficit.

Here are five things learned from tonight’s Anfield clash.

  1. David De Gea proved his worth once again.
The Spanish goalkeeper made a bunch of vital saves to keep Liverpool down to just two goals. It will  still be a tough mountain to climb in the second leg – but at least United still have a chance.
     2. Has Louis Van Gaal broken Marcus Rashford already?
After the initial hype of his first two appearances, with a brace in each. Rashford has been brought back down to earth with a bump. This is typical United under LVG, he simply does not let his players express themselves enough.
      3. Liverpool vs United is still bigger than most games
This may have only been the Europa League, not exactly the Champions League, or a big domestic tussle, but the atmosphere was still absolutely electric. You just don’t get this in London, or most places for that matter.
     4. Both managers really want to win this competition
Top clubs sometimes get accused of not taking a competition seriously by fielding under-strength sides. Not so tonight. Both clubs put out full-strength squads, even accounting for United’s lengthy injury list.
     5. Is Jurgen Klopp on the hunt for a new left-back?
Poor Alberto Moreno. Could hardly be classed among the world’s best in his position, although he does have his moments. But having the manager constantly shouting at him like he did tonight can hardly be the best thing for his confidence.
