Manchester City is eyeing for defensive reinforcements after his side struggled last season.

Manchester City have reportedly seen their £87m get rejected for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.

The 25-year old signed a new contract with Atletico until 2023 who made 191 appearances in all competitions for Atletico Madrid in a seven-year spell.

The Uruguayan international joined Atletico in 2013 from Uruguayan club Danubio FC in a move that cost just £810,000.

He has been among the best defenders in Europe in recent seasons and is regarded as a dressing room leader.

But the 25-year old missed much of last season through injury and made only 19 starts for Diego Simeone’s side.

According to reports in Spain on Monday, Manchester City have had an £87million bid rejected by Atletico for the Uruguayan defender.

Manchester City are gunning for some reliable centre-backs this summer window with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly being their top target in this window.

Gimenez, 25, has no issues staying at the Metropolitano Stadium should City fail to pay his eye-watering £110m minimum release clause.

Manchester City have spent £41m on Nathan Ake and £20.8m on Valencia winger Ferran Torres and will continue to pursue other options before the transfer deadline on October 5th.
