Mourinho hopes to keep the Englishman for another year

Manchester United are set to offer midfielder Michael Carrick a one-year contract extension at the club, following speculation about his future at the club.

The 34-year-old’s future at Old Trafford has been put into question in recent months, with the United star’s deal expiring this month, and with there having been no sign of a new deal on the table.

However, it seems a new deal was delayed until they appointed Jose Mourinho, who has the former Tottenham midfielder firmly in his plans, at least for another season.

Carrick signed a one-year contract extension in March 2015 and helped United to their first piece of major of silverware, following the Sir Alex Ferguson era, starting the Red Devils’ FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

And the chances of the midfielder staying on at United look positive, with Carrick complimentary of Mourinho’s managerial record.

“Mourinho’s track record speaks for itself. He’s a good fit for the club and hopefully he’ll do very well,” said Carrick.

“I have to say it’s sad to see anyone lose their job, the manager and staff, but good times are ahead.”
