Coutinho goal helps Liverpool cruise through to quarter finals at Old Trafford

Phillipe Coutinho scored a wonderful chipped goal on the stroke of half time to help Liverpool cruise through to the Europa League quarter finals vs Manchester United.

United took the lead after half an hour when Nathaniel Clyne brought down Anthony Martial in the box, and Martial got back onto his feet to convert the penalty and give the Old Trafford fans hope after a torrid performance from the team at Anfield last week.

However, a Messi-esque Phillipe Coutinho goal on the stroke of half-time seemed to put the tie to bed, as he glided past Guillermo Varelo and chipped David De Gea at his near post to give Liverpool a priceless away goal.

This left United needing 3 goals in the remaining 45 minutes to progress, which in the end was too big of a target for them to reach. United will feel they could’ve had more goals in the first half, with Juan Mata, Jesse Lingaard and Marcus Rashford all missing chances before the Martial penalty in an end-to-end first half.

The second half was a lot tamer, although overall it was Liverpool who had the upper hand as United struggled to create any clear openings, and it became clear that it would result in Liverpool being in the quarter final draw today. Old Trafford began to empty with 10 minutes to go and United a beaten side, while the away end was bouncing with glee as thousands of smiling scousers went home happy and satisfied with the evening’s result.
