Manchester United legend hits out at ‘overvalued’ Paul Pogba

One of Manchester United’s fabled ‘Class of ’92’ has hit out at the astronomical fee the club are set to shell out to land Paul Pogba.

Pogba was on United’s books as a youngster, but was let go by former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The club only received ÂŁ800,000 in compensation.

Since his departure, the Juventus star has grown into one of Europe’s biggest names. United may now have to fork out ÂŁ86m, if not more, for the Frenchman, 23.

Red Devils legend Paul Scholes played alongside Pogba, and whilst he insists he is a class player, has hit out at the colossal transfer fee.

Ex-England international Scholes told Sport Witness: “I just don’t think he is worth ÂŁ86m.

“For that sort of money, you want someone who is going to score 50 goals a season, like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

“Pogba is worth nowhere near that kind of money yet.

‘He played for the first team maybe once or twice, but from my understanding he was asking for too much money.

‘For his age, he was asking for far too much money, that too for a player who hasn’t played first team football.

‘OK, he has gone on to great things. I think certainly there has been a lot of improvement. He needed to improve if he is going to be a player worth ÂŁ86m.’

Scholes retired in 2011, after 718 appearances for United, third highest on the club’s all-time list. He earned 66 caps for England, and these days co-owns non-league Salford City, who play in the National League North, two steps sway from the Football League.
