Neves has been scouted numerous times by the Gunners

Arsenal are preparing a £22 million move for 18-year-old Porto midfielder Ruben Neves in January, to cover for the injured Francis Coquelin.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has had the Portugal international scouted on numerous occasions this season, while Liverpool have also been taking an interest in the last couple of months.

Neves has captained Porto on numerous occasions, while he has been a part of the club’s successful Champions League campaign so far this season, as Porto sit five points clear at the top of Group H.

Boost to Gunners’ title bid

Wenger is hoping that they can secure the services of the highly-rated midfielder in January, as they look to strengthen their squad for a title bid.

Neves was named man of the match in Porto’s 2-1 victory over Pacos Ferreria on Saturday, while former Arsenal man Luis Boa Morte went to scout his fellow national for the north Londoners.

The 18-year-old can play as a defensive midfielder, while arguably his biggest asset is his passing, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by Arsenal’s local rivals West Ham and Chelsea, plus Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Neves has also broken the record this season for becoming the youngest captain in a Champions League tie against Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
