OFFICIAL: Liverpool agree club record signing for star defender
Liverpool have finally agreed a deal to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, it was confirmed on Wednesday evening.
After a whole summer of speculation, the Reds have now landed their man for a reported fee of ÂŁ75million, making the Dutch international their new signing.
The 26 year-old will also become the most expensive defender of all time when the deal goes through, smashing the ÂŁ52million that Manchester City paid for Benjamin Mendy in the summer.
Van Dijk tried and failed to force a move away from St. Mary’s in the summer with the Reds particularly interested, and went as far as going on strike and being made to train separately by the Saints.
He since returned has for Mauricio Pellegrino’s team, but now his club have finally granted his wish to move to Anfield after a poor start to the season.
Liverpool had been desperate for defensive reinforcements given their frailties at the back, so this will be a huge boost for Jurgen Klopp’s men heading into the new year.
Still involved in Europe, Van Dijk will be eligible to play in the Champions League. The Reds face FC Porto in the round of 16.
