Liverpool vs Manchester United Preview
Liverpool and Manchester United will clash for the 197th time on Monday, with both sides looking to close the gap to leaders Manchester City. Their 48 meetings in the Premier League have produced 127 goals, and we can surely expect a feisty encounter under the Anfield floodlights.
Jurgen Klopp’s side come into this game in slightly better form, having won their last five games. The Red Devils had won three in a row, before being held by Stoke City in their last match.
The head-to-head meetings between Klopp and United manager Jose Mourinho show the German has the upper hand. He has only lost one of five meetings with his Portuguese counterpart, including four meetings in the 2012/13 Champions League (Group Stage and Semi=Finals).
One potential problem for Liverpool fans may be the man in the middle. Anthony Taylor, who was born in Manchester, has been appointed referee for this powder-keg of a tie. For what it’s worth, the club he supports is Altrincham, who play in the National League North, two divisions below League Two.

Liverpool could be without Giorginio Wijnaldum after the Dutchman suffered a hamstring injury on international duty against France, a game which saw United’s Paul Pogba score the only goal in a France victory. Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Emre Can will have their fitness monitored before the game. Clyne and Lovren were able to take part in training on Wednesday, which is a boost for the home side.
United pair Luke Shaw and Henrikh Mkhitaryan did not travel for international duty, unlike many of their colleagues. Phil Jones is recovering from a knee ligament injury. Marouane Fellaini did not feature for Belgium against Gibraltar due to suspension, so is expected to play a part at Anfield.
