Rafa Benitez says they Newcastle United could have registered their fourth win against Everton but insisted he is quite happy with one point.

The Magpies snuffed out any danger that came towards them as Everton dominated possessions. The Toffees were left shell shocked as the Magpies caught them off guard in a counter and Salomon Rondon pounced on a Jacob Murphy cross to fire the visitors to an unexpected lead.

Newcastle were happy to sit back and threw away everything to deny the Merseysiders from netting the equaliser. The home side finally restored parity at the stroke of 38 minutes through Richarlison who fired from close range.

Newcastle defended with their all muscle throughout the match and had Christian Atsu not missed a couple of chances the results would have been different.

Benitez said, “We were defending well and well organised, and doing a fantastic job, the only thing we were not expecting was the chances on the counter-attack that we could have been more clinical with.

“We scored a great goal but we still had two or three chances in the first half, and a couple of chances in the second half, it could have been different.

“You cannot forget they have won their last four home games, they did well in the Merseyside derby too.”
