Pochettino claims that Tottenham’s objective is to finish in the top four

Tottenham Hotspur crashed out of the FA Cup with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace on Sunday after their Carabao Cup campaign was ended by Chelsea in the semi-finals last Thursday.

Having missed the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Heung-min Son up front in both the cup losses, manager Mauricio Pochettino finally has someone to lead the line, with Son back to training on Saturday.

The Korean lacked match fitness to start on Sunday having been away on international duty at the Asian Cup but Pochettino is expecting him to be back in contention for the next game.

Furthermore, the manager is totally unfazed by Tottenham’s back-to-back losses in the cup competitions, claiming that he doesn’t consider the Premier League and the Champions League to be at par with the EFL and FA Cups.

“Today we were with him on the training ground in the morning,” Pochettino said following Saturday’s game.

“He’s so tired, played three games. Very tough games. Not too much energy today, but we hope he’ll be available on Wednesday.”

“We are going to create a debate that to win a trophy is going to help the club,” Pochettino said.

The manager further reiterated the fact that the club’s primary objective is to finish in the top four in the Premier League, which remains completely unaffected by the cup exits.

“I don’t agree with that. That only builds your ego. In reality, the most important thing is being consistently in the top four and playing Champions League.

“That is going to help the club to achieve the last step. Today the club is doing fantastically. It’s so successful.

“In the last four or five years, we’ve been fighting in different ways to achieve what the club needs, to be in the level of Chelsea, United, City or Arsenal or Liverpool.”
