Redknapp warns Liverpool not to lose emotional control in title chase

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp believes Liverpool must control their emotions to not bottle their title challenge.

“You can dress it up as a point gained on Manchester City but it felt like a miss,” Redknapp said on Sky Sports News.

“At home, against Leicester, whose results have been up and down, it was a big opportunity to make the gap even bigger, but they will have to get used to it.

Nerves will play a big part, that’s inevitable. They haven’t won the league in so long. I remember there were times when I was there and we got close and the feeling and anxiety goes next level.

“The players and the fans want it so badly, but you have to control your emotions. It was a tough one last night and they have to bounce back on Monday at West Ham. It did feel like two points dropped.”

“They need to get Trent Alexander-Arnold back,” said Redknapp. “They are playing Jordan Henderson at right-back and, having played in midfield, you don’t want to be at right-back. He can do it but he’s not used to it.

“Letting Nathaniel Clyne leave was a strange one. When you haven’t got a right-back that can come in, with Joe Gomez injured as well, they will need Alexander-Arnold back quickly because he is a special talent and makes such a difference.”

“City are in it and so are Spurs, but I still think Liverpool are still in control.

“It was a tough game, the conditions were awful and didn’t help Liverpool with the way they play. I thought Leicester did well in the way they sat back and defended and Harry Maguire was excellent. Liverpool got a point and didn’t lose and can move forward.”
