The England star has endured a tough season at the Etihad

Manchester City and England winger Raheem Sterling admits his first season at the Etihad has been a “massive learning curve”.

The 21-year-old made just 23 starts in the Premier League this campaign, and came under criticism for not producing the form that made him a wanted man during his time with Liverpool.

However, the Jamaica-born Three Lions star insists he never thought his place on the plane to France, for the European Championships, was under threat – having featured in both of England’s pre-Euros warm-up friendlies against Turkey and Australia.

“It was frustrating when the injury kicked in and frustrating getting back into the team,” said Sterling.

“There was not one point I was worried and I was really looking forward to coming away with England and hopefully book a place on the way to France.

“I’ve learned quite a bit going into City for my first year. It was a massive learning curve and I’ll definitely take that into next season.

“I haven’t scored as many goals or assisted as many goals as I’ve wanted to, but I’m definitely improving mentally.”

And now with the league campaign over, and attention turning to international football, Sterling is ready to hit the ground running, and hopes he can guide the Three Lions to European success, while shutting out negativity surrounding his season.

“That’s the most important thing for me – my mentality to not really listen to outsiders and to just concentrate on myself and be myself and express myself.” said Sterling.

“It’s really positive when the manager tells you every time you get the ball that he wants you to go forwards, I’m most definitely enjoying my football.

“It’s really good. Every training session if I don’t go forward the manager [Roy Hodgson] kind of has a dig at me so that’s something I’m relishing and something I really enjoy.”

“It’s not to say we’re being naive, but we’re going into the tournament to do well, not just to participate but to really try to challenge for it,”

Despite his season not reaching the heights he had hoped this campaign, Sterling is one of the names all but certain to be heading to France in a matter of weeks.
