The Germany international is set for a Westfalenstadion return

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed the club have entered talks with Borussia Dortmund about the potential sale of midfielder Mario Gotze.

The Bavarians signed the midfielder for a fee of around ÂŁ32 million back in 2013 from Dortmund, however, the World Cup winner failed to cement himself in the plans of former Bayern boss Pep Guardiola.

Former BVB boss Jurgen Klopp had hoped to tempt Gotze to Anfield, for a reunion with his compatriot, however, he insisted he wanted to fight for his place at the Allianz Arena.

But the club could not promise him game time under new boss Carlo Ancelotti, and now is sensationally set for a return to the club who gave him his Bundesliga breakthrough.

“I can confirm that talks with Borussia Dortmund have taken place,” said Rummenigge. “There have also been talks with his agent, but the deal is not done just yet. Both clubs will have to reach an agreement over a transfer fee first.

“Gotze has been at Bayern for three years and it did not work out for him. I am not surprised that Gotze wants to leave. He is 24 years old and needs to play regularly.”

Back in April, Dortmund fans unveiled a banner revealing their displeasure and insisted they wouldn’t welcome him back, but Rummennige admits Gotze has a big decision to make.

“He knows what the club thinks and what the new coach thinks. Mario has to evaluate for himself whether he wants to play constantly.”
