Higuain has to take more responsibility if he is to stay at Milan, says Leonardo

AC Milan sporting director Leonardo has advised Argentine talisman Gonzalo Higuain to get down to work, amidst rumours linking him with a move to Chelsea.

Higuain arrived on a season-long loan deal at San Siro from Juventus upon the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in July but the 31-year-old has struggled to live up to his billings.

The talisman ended his two-month goal drought before the winter break, scoring the winner against SPAL and taking his tally to 6 goals from 15 games in the Serie A- an unimpressive goal to match ratio for a player of his stature.

Higuain failed to deliver the goods on the European front as Milan crashed out from the group stages of the UEFA Europa League.

“A goal can change things, but if he is to continue here, he needs to take on responsibility,” warned Leonardo.

“He had a tough moment, he has to put it behind him and get to work.”

Milan have an obligation to sign Higuain permanently at the end of the season but he has also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge to reunite with his former Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri.

“There’s no point following rumours and gossip,” said Leonardo.

“He is here right now. Seeing as he is here, he needs to get down and actually do something for this team.”
