Phil Foden has more than earned his keep at Manchester City, ready to replace David Silva from next season onwards.
Pep Guardiola hailed praise on the midfielder who became the youngest player to win the Premier League in 2018.
Foden sprinkled his magic all over the pitch during City’s 2-1 Carabao Cup final victory over Aston Villa. However, it took him two whole seasons to get his acceptance from Guardiola himself.
“David is going to leave this season and we are not going to buy any player in his position because we have Phil,” Guardiola said in January. “If we didn’t believe in him we might go to the market to replace David, but we have Phil.”
The fact that Guardiola has backed Foden this early on means something for the young and budding Englishman. He is one of the most coveted prospects in the country and the Wembley display will tell you exactly why.
“If the manager says something like that, it gives you a lot of belief and courage to keep playing and doing well,” Foden says. “With the manager behind you, it can only help you and make you better. He is always trying to help me each day and it’s just a pleasure for me to be a part of it.”
