Real Madrid and Spain legend Iker Casillas has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.

Casillas won five La Liga titles and the Champions League three times with Real Madrid and made 725 appearances for the Spanish gaints before departing in 2015.

The 39-year old won two Primeira Liga titles at Porto after leaving Real in 2015 but has not played competitive football since suffering from a heart attack last year.

He captained the ‘golden’ Spanish squad that won the World Cup in 2010 as well as European Championship in 2008 and 2012.

“The important thing is the path you travel and the people who accompany you, not the destination that it takes you,” Casillas posted on Instagram alongside a lengthy retirement letter.

“Because that with work and effort comes alone and I think I can say, without hesitation, that it has been the path and the dream destination.”

“The best goalkeeper in the history of Real Madrid and Spanish football joined us at the age of 9,” Real Madrid said in a statement.

“He was formed here and defended our shirt for 25 years, becoming one of our most emblematic captains of all time. Iker Casillas earned the love of madridismo and is a symbol of the values that Real Madrid represents.”
