Real Madrid and Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has won UEFA’s Best Player in Europe award for the 2015-16 season.

It is the second time that Ronaldo, nicknamed CR7, has won the award. He also took home the award in the 2013-14 season, and becomes the second two-time winner, alongside his rival, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

He beat Real colleague Gareth Bale and Antoine Griezmann, of Atletico Madrid, in a three-man final shortlist.

Ronaldo played a major part in Real’s historic 11th Champions League victory, and scored 51 goals and 15 assists in 48 total appearances between La Liga and the Champions League. He managed to score more goals in the Champions League last season (16), than 26 teams managed in total, which shows how influential he was.

He also helped lead Portugal to the country’s first ever Euros title, scoring three goals and adding two assists in seven appearances.

Ronaldo was appreciative of his teammates, both at the Bernabeu and at international level:

‘It’s a great honour. My teammates are the key—they are the key every year. I work hard myself but without their help this would not be possible. Thanks to my teammates from Real Madrid and Portugal. [Winning EURO] was different because I’ve won the Champions League three times now. To win something with Portugal was the highlight of my career.’
