The midfielder is now a free agent.
Real Madrid midfielder Lucas Silva has canceled his contract, which was set to expire in the summer of 2020.
Lucas Silva was purchased by Real Madrid in January 2015 for €13 million, but never quite settled, going out on loan to Marseille and back to Cruzeiro before his contract was terminated by mutual consent. The midfielder also spent one season on a loan deal with Olympique Marseille but never managed to reach his potential.
The 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder still he has plenty of time to turn things around and become a useful player in European football. However, it’s fairly clear that he will not be the kind of player he was in the Brazilian Serie A, where he was one of the best midfielders.
“I wish I had had more opportunities in Madrid, but it just wasn’t possible. It was still a great experience, I learned a lot and with only one year left on my contract, we both decided it was better for everyone to just terminate the deal early,” Lucas Silva told Esporte Interactivo.
“I was considered the best young midfielder in Brazil when I arrived, so naturally I expected it to go differently with Madrid, but I regret nothing and want to think only of the next opportunity.
Silva is now free to negotiate with any team, as he hopes to sign for another club in Europe.
“I want to play in Europe, that is my objective, especially if I can get back into the Brazil squad that way. Serie A would be perfectly suited to my characteristics and that’d represent a very important move. I was close to Genoa and we were in direct contact, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t finalized due to some details.”
A number of clubs including Atalanta, Espanyol, Sevilla, Tigres and Club America have previously been linked with a summer move this year. However, there are no favorites for a player who overcame a heart condition which was diagnosed in 2016.
