Van de Beek’s injury puts Real Madrid move in jeopardy

The Dutch midfielder was identified as the backup option to Paul Pogba.

Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek has been closely followed by Real Madrid, above all if they are unable to sign Paul Pogba.

Real Madrid are among a host of top European sides credited with an interest in the midfielder as Los Blancos continue their squad rebuild under returning boss Zinedine Zidane. Indeed, Marca have gone as far as reporting that Donny van de Beek has agreed personal terms with the La Liga giants ahead of a switch to the Bernabeu.

“It is no secret that my future is being discussed with Ajax. Talks about a potential move are ongoing and hopefully we will reach a conclusion soon,” the Dutch international told reporters two weeks ago.

However, the Dutchman has now suffered a blow that will likely make his Real Madrid dream impossible. He is set to miss Ajax’s crucial Champions League with APOEL Nicosia after suffering a leg injury.

The midfielder suffered a muscle injury to his upper leg during training on Friday.

Van de Beek confirmed via the Ajax official website that he will miss the match with APOEL Nicosia on Wednesday, “I am really sorry. I certainly miss Wednesday’s match against APOEL. Next week, I hope to get clarity about how long it will take afterwards.”

The 22-year-old has scored twice in seven games this season but will now be out of action for an unspecified time. He could also miss Netherlands European Championship qualifiers against Germany and Estonia.
