The Reds are after Asier Illarramendi and Denis Cheryshev

Liverpool are closing in on signing out of favour Real Madrid midfielders Asier Illarramendi and Denis Cheryshev, according to reports.

The Anfield club are said to be in talks with Madrid over a deal for Russia international Cheryshev, whilst the Illarramendi deal remains in the pipeline.

Liverpool are still looking to replace Raheem Sterling after his ÂŁ49 million move to Manchester City, and Cheryshev could be a decent purchase at a mere ÂŁ14.2 million, having impressed on loan at Villarreal last season.

Brendan Rodgers is looking for cover and competition in central midfield, and Illarramendi could fit that category.

Both players have been told they can leave the Bernabeu, but will only join a club where they are guaranteed a regular first team spot.

The Reds have already bought in seven new players, and are still keen to add to their squad to fuel a charge for a Champions League spot.
