Robert Lewandowski confirmed to the press that his contract extension with Bayern Munich is nearing completion.

The Polish forward took apart Schalke with his hat-trick on Saturday as the match ended 3-0. Concerns were earlier raised regarding his future at the Allianz Arena but he put all that to rest by claiming to have nearly signed a two-year extension.

Lewandowski’s current deal is set to run till June 2021 but fans would like to see him continue for longer. When asked if he had agreed to a new contract, he told Sky: “Not yet, maybe 95 per cent.”

“I can always play better and I have the potential improve each season,” he added. “I can do something special on my own every season, but I try to help the team. No matter who I play against, I always try to score goals.”

Bayern Munich manager, Niko Kovac also hailed Lewandowski’s impact on the team and on German football. He said, “[His performance was] sensationally good, that’s what he’s there for. That’s what he can do.

“He has already proved in the last five, six, seven years – I don’t know how long he has been in Germany – that he’s the best striker in the Bundesliga. Not only in the last game, but also today. His efficiency and accuracy are unique. We are glad that we have him and I hope that he will continue like this in the next weeks and months.”
