Spanish giants Real Madrid have placed defender Fabio Coentrau on the transfer list.
Manchester United are looking for defensive cover for a leaky and injury-hit backline, and Coentrao could fit the bill.
Left-back Luke Shaw, signed from Southampton only this summer, has been among the stars spending a lot of time in the treatment room, and United boss Louis van Gaal may look for reinforcements in the January transfer window, and the veteran defender is seen as an option.
The Red Devils had been rumoured to be looking at Roma’s Ashley Cole, who also made a move in the summer from Chelsea.
But attention may now turn to Coentrao, who has fallen behind Marcelo in the Bernabeu pecking order. And with the news that he is now on the transfer list, a move could well happen in the New Year.
Coentrao could well attract attention from all over Europe, with Paris St Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all interested. But van Gaal hopes the promise of first-team football will be enough.
If he does go. Real may take a look at Bayern’s David Alaba.
