Liverpool are in the hunt for a new defender this January.

The Reds have been linked with Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie who is rumoured to have a €70 million release clause.

The 21-year-old Ecuadorian is monitored by several European clubs and Liverpool are keeping a close eye on the defender.

Liverpool has lost experienced Joel Matip to a season-ending ACL injury and Klopp knows he needs to add another option to their ranks.

The club are also actively looking for a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk and have shortlisted a few defenders.

Hincapie’s contract expires in the summer of 2027 and Leverkusen will not want to let him go for a small fee.

The versatile defender would be the perfect addition to Klopp’s squad who are in dire need of a strong centre defence.

Romano said: “Liverpool are another club looking at centre-backs, but so far, no contacts have taken place with Bayer Leverkusen for Piero Hincapie from what I’m told.

“Hincapie has been strongly linked with Liverpool and other top clubs as he’s looked like a superb young talent for some time now, and he’s also not playing as often as he might have expected. So, it’s normal to see new stories about the player.”
