Fellaini Success, Coentrao and Herrera Failure

Deadline day was busy in the red part of Manchester yesterday but only one bit of business was successful. Marouanne Fellaini signed from Everton on deadline day for a fee of ÂŁ27.5 million.

It emerged late on in the transfer deadline day that Manchester had signed Fabio Coentrao from Readl Madrid, Madrid had wanted to get the left back off the wage billl and had been unable to sell him during the window, his agent Jorge Mendes also wanted Coentrao to move to United. Manchester United boss had shown great interest in Everton left back Leighton Baines but failed in bringing him to the club so looked for an alternative.

Madrid wanted to sanction the move but they had to have time to bring in Granada left back Guilherme Siqueira to replace him but he had already gone out on loan to Benefica.

When United finally came for Coentrao Madrird tried to undo Siquiera’s temporary switch to Portugal, it looked like it could go ahead but Benefica resisted and Madrird had a severe lack of will.

Ancelotti had told Florentino Perez Madrid’s president that he had wanted to keep Coentrao, there were simply too many parties wanting to block the deal and United had simply left it too late.

United’s move for another La Liga target was midfielder Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao, it however descended into a farce when three imposters strode into the La Liga’s main offices pretending to be officials of Manchester United.

The trio left an hour later unable to complete the necessary paperwork, as it turned out the Herrera deal died anyway shortly afterwards with Moyes stating that the ÂŁ30.5 million release clause was simply too high. Moyes remains a fan and could return to the deal in January, Herrera appeared very happy with the move but United backed off.

United also made a ÂŁ40 million bid for Sami Khedira but was immediately rebuffed.
