FIFA has confirmed it will not relocate Sunday’s World Cup final from New York despite hazardous air quality from Canadian wildfires engulfing the city.

New York recorded an Air Quality Index of 208 on Thursday, ranking it among the world’s most polluted cities.
Smoke from Canadian wildfires blanketed New York this week, but meteorologists expect it to clear by Sunday’s World Cup final at MetLife Stadium.
It’s unclear how FIFA would handle poor air quality for the match, and at which levels it would delay or postpone play.

The “very unhealthy” conditions have raised concerns about player safety and performance at the MetLife Stadium showcase.
However, FIFA officials maintain that conditions will improve in time for the championship match.
The governing body’s Miami command centre has National Weather Service staff monitoring conditions throughout the tournament.
Senior forecaster Bob Oravec predicts the smoke will intensify on Saturday but clear by Sunday, allowing the final to proceed as scheduled.
Spain midfielder Mikel Merino confirmed his team has already felt the impact during training in East Hanover, New Jersey.
“For a game that is as important as a World Cup final, you have to be able to shut out external factors as much as possible,” he told the Associated Press.
Medical experts warn that even moderate pollution could affect player performance.
Chantal Darquenne, professor of medicine at the University of California, explained:
“It’s kind of a dose-dependent effect. If it’s moderate, it’s going to be less of an effect, but it’s still going to be there, especially because they are doing vigorous exercise.”
The smoke crisis has also sparked political tension. US President Donald Trump blamed Canada on social media, claiming the US is “being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air.”
Meanwhile, Trump praised FIFA President Gianni Infantino for overturning Folarin Balogun’s red card suspension, allowing the US player to feature in their Round of 16 match against Belgium.
The decision drew criticism from football fans, but Trump defended the move at a FIFA reception. “There’s no controversy. They won the game, and our team had all of its players,” he said.
Balogun later admitted the situation created uncertainty within the squad. “I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy,” he told CBS Mornings.
“When we found out on the team bus, everyone was screaming and shouting. It was a pretty intense bus ride.”
With both the smoke crisis and Balogun controversy overshadowing preparations, Sunday’s final promises to be one of the most talked-about World Cup matches in recent history.
