Video footage captured the moment Bellingham, standing alone on the pitch after the final whistle, received consolation from an Argentinian player before Barco joined his teammates for a group celebration.
The Brighton defender appeared to make a comment toward the England midfielder, prompting Bellingham to lash out.
The 22-year-old hit Barco on the head, and the Argentinian immediately pushed him back.
Players from both teams rushed in to separate the pair before the situation could escalate further.
Bellingham later admitted the defeat had hit him hard.
“It’s a very sad day for us. We played well, we fought until the end, but it wasn’t enough,” the midfielder told reporters after the game.
England manager Thomas Tuchel faced criticism on social media for his defensive tactics in the closing stages.
The German coach had switched to a back five to protect the lead, but the strategy backfired spectacularly.
Tuchel defended his decisions, saying: “We conceded a chance straight away and we decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open.
Of course, the responsibility is on the coach and if it doesn’t go well, it is easy to say it was wrong.”
England must now regroup for the third-place playoff against France on Saturday, while Argentina advance to face the winner of the other semifinal in Sunday’s showpiece final.
The incident has overshadowed what was otherwise a memorable tournament for Bellingham, who had established himself as one of England’s standout performers before Wednesday’s heartbreaking exit.
