Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes Manchester United should try and land Gareth Bale if David De Gea joins Real Madrid this summer.
Meulensteen believes if Manchester United do decide to sell David De Gea to Real Madrid, they at the very least should attempt to bring Gareth Bale to Old Trafford in return.
De Gea has been linked to a move to Madrid over the last few seasons, but the deal never quite came to pass.
With Madrid persuing De Gea the way they have been over the last couple of years, United have felt more and more pressure as the offers for their main man between the sticks got bigger and bigger.
Many fans have openly spoken against the idea, believing the best thing for the club would be to keep the Spaniard in Manchester at all costs – but Rene Meulensteen believes if United are forced to give in to Madrid, they should at the very least gain something out of it.
The former Red Devils coach told talkSPORT: “The speculation [about De Gea] has been there now for three years.
“Manchester United and Jose Mourinho must try to make sure that if that is the case, what is the best outcome for Manchester United?
“For instance, they say ‘OK you get De Gea, what do we want? You give us Bale’.
“There has to be something where Manchester United come out of it even better.”
