Frank Lampard has admitted that a conversation with Luke Shaw at this summer’s World Cup Finals convinced him to retire from international football, reports the Daily Express.

Lampard has revealed that the 19 year old England fullback did not know who former England, and Arsenal centre back Tony Adams actually was.

The 36 year old, who retired from the international stage following England’s poor World Cup campaign, brought up his friend in a conversation with Manchester United’s new fullback, and to his surprise, Shaw seemed puzzled.

Lampard, who will join New York City FC in March, having left Chelsea at the end of last season, ande over 100 international appearances for his country in an international career spanning 16 years.

Speaking to The Sun, Lampard stated: “I was having a chat with Luke Shaw and I mentioned Tony Adams and he didn’t seem to know who I was talking about.

“I said: “Are you winding me up?” And he said: “Who did he play for?” I knew then then it was time to retire.’
