Frank Lampard thinks that Luke Shaw’s absence from Euro 2024 will be much regretted by Gareth Southgate and that the attacking threat and lack of balance down the left wing have turned into a true problem. Shaw had a major hamstring injury in mid-February and has not played for Manchester United since. Nevertheless, he was included in England’s 26-man team for the tournament this summer.
Shaw’s injury has prevented him from playing in the Three Lions‘ first two group stage matches in Germany; in Southgate’s defense against Serbia and Denmark, Kieran Trippier has filled in for Shaw. The left-sided left-back position has not come naturally to Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, who said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “It felt really good to me watching the last tournaments when Luke Shaw was there.”
We could have a balance where Kyle Walker could remain longer and form this three at the back because Luke Shaw was much more offensive on that side of the pitch. We haven’t had that; therefore, he will want to find a solution for that, Lampard added.
England Scenario in Euro 2024
Nonetheless, Shaw was seen returning to training on Monday as all 26 members of Southgate’s team were tested ahead of this evening’s match in Cologne against Slovenia, which could provide a boost to England’s hopes.
Despite Albania’s defeat, which guaranteed England would finish among the top four third-place teams, Gareth Southgate’s team leads the table with four points from victories against Serbia and Denmark (1–1). Although the Three Lions’ Group C campaign comes to an end on Tuesday in Cologne against Slovenia at 20:00 BST, they are already assured a spot in the next round.
