Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has given Liverpool and Manchester United the green-light to sign Xherdan Shaqiri.

Shaqiri has been a prime target for several Premier League sides in recent months, however it appears that United and Liverpool have the advantage.

The Swiss international is set to leave the Allianz Arena, with Beckenbauer  confirming that he is likely to leave in the January window.

Shaqiri, aged 23, has found his first-team chances limited at the Bundesliga title holders, due to the summer arrival of Robert Lewandowski.

‘Bayern have already sent out a signal and indicated to him that he can probably go in the winter break, when he wants,’ Beckenbauer stated.

‘Personally, I want players who want to stay here with us, for me if a player doesn’t want to be here then it’s right he go to another club,’ he said.

‘I think it’s a shame because he is a great talent.’
