The Sun claims that Fulham boss, Claudio Ranieri wants to get rid of Tom Cairney and bring Jonjo Shelvey in his place.

The Cottagers club captain, Cairney has fallen out of favour with the new boss and was even taken off the starting lineup for the Boxing Day fixture against Wolves. The 28-year-old is a club hero and played a major part in their promotion from the Championship last season.

His remarkable form earned him plaudits from fans and pundits and even brought in numerous offers from Premier League sides, including Newcastle United. Rafael Benitez is said to be an admirer of Cairney, who mostly likes to operate in the attacking midfield role.

Ranieri’s system does not favour players like Cairney who are highly attentive offensively but nonchalant on the defensive end. The former Leicester City boss likes a packed midfield which is ready to pounce on the opponent whenever they lose possession.

Ranieri have tried to field Cairney out wide but the latter has looked more clueless than ever in his new role. It is only time before he drops completely out of the rotation unless he gets to adjust quickly into Ranieri’s system.

Otherwise, the Italian boss could quickly work out a exchange deal with Newcastle United. The Magpies are strained for cash but need more attacking reinforcements.

Reports claim that Fulham could approach West Ham United as well with the same deal for Pedro Obiang.
