Gareth Southgate had hoped to take Adam Lallana to World Cup, the English boss has revealed. The Liverpool midfielder was left out of the World Cup as frequent injuries halted his progress last season and he managed only one appearance in the Premier League last term.

Southgate has included the 30 year old in his squad for the upcoming UEFA League Nation. The Three Lions are scheduled to face Spain and Switzerland in September.

On the back of a successful World Cup, Southgate would be hoping for a good show in this tournament. England failed to reach the final in the World Cup but the progress of the side has been very satisfactory.

Southgate is an avid admirer of Lallana and had the player not been injured he would have had the chance to book a seat on the flight to Russia. “Adam is a player that has had a big contribution for us.

“When you look at the squad I’ve named, all of that squad should be available for two years’ time.

“We don’t want to waste time looking at new things. We have to continue to progress but we’re working off a solid foundation this time.

“Adam is definitely a player that falls in the category of, if he had been fit, he would have definitely come with us in the summer.”
