Gary Neville: Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is envious of Chelsea’s Antonio Conte

Jose Mourinho is envious of Antonio Conte and former club Chelsea, according to Manchester United legend Gary Neville.

The Portuguese manager was sacked by Chelsea midway through last term after a poor start saw them just above the relegation zone.

Conte has since sparked life into the Blues camp and has guided them to the top of the Premier League ladder and they are now the bookmakers’ favourites to win the title.

Mourinho has since been appointed the manager of rivals United, but he has not worked his charm just yet at the Theatre of Dreams as his Red Devils fight to gain a place in the top four.

Pundit Neville believes Mourinho is jealous of how good of a job Conte is doing at Chelsea, despite saying the west London club play ‘defensive’.

“He’s probably envious, probably saying it as a compliment, because when I watch Chelsea they looked balanced to me, the right mix of what you would like,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I’ve never watched Chelsea this season and thought they were really boring, I’ve seen them go away to City and be absolutely outstanding, I’ve seen them be resilient when they needed to be, I’ve seen them play great football.

“When I’ve watched them this season, they have a look of a team that’s got the right balance, and if Jose Mourinho is saying that, maybe he is being a little bit mischievous, but he’ll be thinking that is the balance of a champion team.

“Jose will be searching for that balance, understanding that at United you need to be a little bit more expansive in the way in which he plays.”
