Gary Neville: Moyes needs time

Ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville believe Moyes can become one of the clubs great, but needs time to build his squad. Moyes is becoming under increasing pressure at Old Trafford after United dropped points at the weekend, drawing 2-2 with Fulham at home, and United are now 16 points away from Chelsea at the top of the league. It now looks like even a top 4 finish and a place in next season’s Champions League could be out of their reach, as they are currently 9 points behind Liverpool, who currently hold the place. United have a huge test on Wednesday evening as they travel to title-hopeful Arsenal, where another setback would increase the critisism of the Scotsman.

But Gary Neville believes the current Premier League champions aren’t the kind to make hasty decisions. When asked whether he thought Moyes would remain in charge if United missed out on top 4, he said, “I prefer to talk about a club that isn’t like the others, with and different philosophy and who give managers time.”

“At Manchester United, hard work always pays off and David Moyes is working very hard. Before, Alex Ferguson, Tommy Docherty, Dave Sexton and Ron Atkinson also had time. They got full support. Moyes deserves as much time as them. Manchester United is not like Real Madrid or Chelsea, they aren’t a club who will just sack a manager because he hasn’t won a trophy.

Moyes’ relationship with the media is also going downhill, with his Arsenal pre-match press conference lasting just 3 minutes. Neville feels that the former Everton boss must now adjust to being in the full glare of the spotlight now he is at a world-wide known club.

“The Manchester United manager is like head of state- when he speaks, his words are sent all around the world within seconds. Manchester United is a moster you need to tame, I will always believe that the club will change David Moyes and not the other way round.”
