Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes his former club must compete with Manchester City for the signature of Aymeric Laporte.

City have been linked with Laporte since Pep Guardiola took charge and it appears the Catalan is on the verge of getting his man after a deal was agreed for the Athletic Bilbao defender.

Jonny Evans looked set for a move to the Etihad earlier in the January transfer window but Arsenal are now in pole position for the West Brom star as City hone in signing Laporte.

Neville is well aware of Laporte’s immense potential from his time in charge of Valencia and has urged Jose Mourinho to hijack City’s move for the highly-rated French centre-back.

“In my very short time in Spain we played them 3 times! This lad can play! Get in United,’ the ex-United right-back tweeted.

“It’s really hard to get players out of Bilbao and costly but this lad is a very good player.”
