The former Liverpool midfielder hailed his former England teammate
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard believes Michael Carrick is the secret behind Manchester United’s recent upturn in form in the Premier League.
Jose Mourinho’s men are just three points shy of the top four, with Manchester City still to play Arsenal on Sunday, and the Red Devils’ recent form is no coincidence with Carrick returning to the team, according to Gerrard.
The long-serving midfielder was an outcast earlier in the season, as Mourinho struggled to create a memorable first impression at Old Trafford.
However, Carrick has started all of United’s league games so far this month and has shown Mourinho encouraging signs, with another impressive performance in the Red Devils’ comfortable 2-0 win at the Hawthorns, against West Brom on Saturday.
“Now Carrick is the key man because they’ve got that security where he protects the back two but at the same time he helps them a lot going forward as he breaks the lines with his passes,” said Gerrard.
“I think Pogba and Herrera feel more comfortable getting forward and into the box.”
The England midfielder’s future had been uncertain during the summer, but has remained at Old Trafford and now looks to have found a regular role in the centre of the park for United.
It’s all welcome news for Mourinho, who has seen his side win their last three league games, and unbeaten since losing 4-0 to Chelsea back in October.
