Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that the club are considering offering club captain Steven Gerrard a new contract.

Gerrard has come in for criticism in recent weeks, regarding his performances so far this season.

He answered those doubters somewhat, with a stunning free kick in last Saturday’s Merseyside Derby, although his side were pegged back late on.

Speaking today, Rodgers praised Gerrard’s professionalism and work ethic.

“He is still in a really good physical condition. He’s 34, he trains every day, he never needs a day’s rest. He wants to work.”

Liverpool and Gerrard will travel to Basel this evening, for their second Champions League group game and this vote of confidence from Rodgers shows how much the Northern Irishman still values his skipper.

Gerrard retired from the England captaincy to concentrate on playing regular Champions League football, but many will be interested to see what games Rodgers will rest him from now on.
