Gerrard happy with new position.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is enjoying the new role that he has been given under manager Brendan Rodgers, and believes it will improve him as a player, and will probably increase his career as a professional footballer.

The Liverpool captain has dropped down into a deeper lying midfield role, to support both Daniel Sturridge and Uruguay centre forward Luis Suarez, as the Reds push for the Champions League….and a possible title running, with Gerrard pulling the strings in a deeper position in the centre of midfield.

But Gerrard does not believe playing deeper has lessened his attacking impact on the side, something that was highlighted by scoring a superb free kick in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat against Hull City at the KC Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Gerrard made his Liverpool debut in 2001, and has since enjoyed a very successful career, helping the Merseyside club to FA Cup wins, League Cup wins and a historic Champions League Final win in 2005, but Gerrard still want’s to win a Premier League title before his career is up.

Gerrard said in an interview.

“If you play around good players, they make good movement and put themselves in good positions,” he told the club’s website.

“My job, and what the manager wants me to do from my position, is to try to create and be a playmaker in there.

“Maybe I’m playing a little bit deeper this year but I can still get into areas where I can hurt the opposition. That’s what I’m trying to do.

“We do work on set-pieces. It’s a part of my game that I’ve tried to work on all my career – to put good deliveries into the box.

“I’ve been putting the ball in really good, inviting areas and the forward players and defenders have been finishing them off.

“The statistics in football, when it comes down to set-pieces, are huge and can be the difference between winning big football matches and where you finish at the end of the season.

“It’s important that we keep scoring from set-pieces, but also that we tighten up and become more aggressive and ruthless when we’re defending our own goal.”
