Former-defender Sol Campbell has told Tottenham Hotspur fans to ‘get over’ the fact that he left them in order to join fierce-rivals Arsenal.

The England centre-back, who later went on to win several trophies with Arsenal, is a hated figure around White Hart Lane due to his betrayal to the club, with many people labelling him as a ‘judas’.

He was at Spurs for over a decade before moving to Arsene Wenger’s side in 2001, and despite making the move to the rivals, Campbell believes it’s time to fans moved on from the decision.

‘I was 25/26. I was a young man and I wanted to win,’ he told the BBC.

‘We are talking 15 years ago now. I am sure Tottenham as a club have moved on.’

When Campbell had to play against Tottenham, he suffered a lot of abuse from the fans and they seemed keen accuse him over his sexuality, but the former-defender has put that down to his character.

‘I think I got that because people could not really get me,’ he said. ‘Football is such a bubble and if you do not fit into that bubble there will always be people saying things.

‘I was very shy as a boy, I didn’t want to tell people what I was doing. Most clubs are gossip pits, as I call it, and I just wanted to concentrate on football.

‘It is just bizarre. It really is. One minute you move from Tottenham to Arsenal and the next minute people are singing things on the terraces.

‘It is quite scary that people take as gospel what is said on the terraces.’
