The defender is out of contract at Liverpool

The England international started out with the Hammers before making the move to Chelsea in 2003.

Johnson, has struggled to make an impact this season, managing just 14 starts for Liverpool and could be headed to London, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 30-year old has further fuelled speculation about a potential exit after failing to rule out a move in the summer.

Johnson said: “I haven’t got a contract so it doesn’t look as if I will be staying. We will have to see if that is going to change but I don’t think so.”

The interested parties

Carl Jenkinson, on loan from Arsenal, has deputised well in the right-back position but is due to return to the Emirates with Arsene Wenger ruling out another loan deal.

The Hammers pursuit of Johnson seems to suggest that Sam Allardyce and his team will not make a permanent offer for Jenkinson.

Johnson might be re-united with former boss Steve McClaren, who despite signing a new deal with Derby County after turning down Newcastle, is seen as a possible replacement for Allardyce.

Contrasting reports from ESPN have linked Roma with a move for the Liverpool defender – where former Chelsea team-mate Ashley Cole plays his football.
